MCA was a proud sponsor and supporter of the South African Planning Institute’s two yearly conference – Planning Africa 2018 . It was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in October 2018. This year’s theme was, “The making of the modern African city”. Aside from sponsoring, MCA was actively involved on a number of fronts.
Gill Cullinan and Timothy Blatch both delivered industry papers. Gill’s presentation was titled, “Collaborative engagements in the planning process and the role of intermediary organisations” – click here to view. Using her work with the Western Cape Economic Development Agency, Gill explored the importance of developing a culture of learning and collaboration and the important role of intermediaries in facilitating this process.
Tim Blatch’s presentation was titled, “Partnering and systems thinking in facilitating positive change and improving spatial planning practice” – click here to view. Tim also drew on his work with the Western Cape Economic Development Agency and explored the value of systems thinking when applied to spatial planning projects and programmes.
Matt Cullinan facilitated a panel discussion exploring the instruments and tools for the making of the modern African city which explored the policy, regulatory and financial dimensions of translating plans into change on the ground. Matt was also involved in supporting the Local Organizing Committee. Tim Blatch, a member of the Western Cape SAPI Committee, helped organise the preceding young planners conference and also helped run the conference.
