The Integrated Urban Development Framework of 2014 from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs conceptualises a new way of guiding urban growth and infrastructure provision in South African cities. This is especially important as South Africa is now an urban nation with over 60% of the population living in cities. Direct engagement with the urban context is needed to enable positive change in the complex and unique urban issues that cities and their residents face today. This presentation offers a summary of the IUDF and draws out the key points from the document. This is to help urban practitioners quickly gain an understanding of the IUDF and its implications for urban areas in South Africa.
